Earlier this week we attended the 6th #SustainableLeatherForum, hosted by @AllianceFranceCuir at @maisondelachimie in Paris!

Some of our key takeaways:

🌎 Traceability is on everyone’s minds
Achieving complete traceability for leather products requires better technology, more accurate and reliable data, and collaboration between different stakeholders in the leather supply chain.

👞Raising livestock & leather making
The leather industry should maintain clear communications with consumers about the connection between raising livestock and leather making in order to promote a better understanding of its position as a by-product of the food industry.

🌱Science-based methodologies are key
There have been many attempts to quantify the environmental footprint of leather as a material, which is no easy task. Italian sustainability consultancy @spin360_official is working with @UNIDO_org to create a science-based methodology for creating leather environmental footprints that will take into account product use and longevity, which will help the industry better understand its impact through the supply chain and eventual end use in order to demonstrate a bigger and more informative picture.

Fashion Weeks are underway and our mission led campaign is to encourage fashion #designers, #students, #brands and #consumers to consider #Repair, #Repurpose and #Re-use.

Fast fashion has a significant environmental impact. According to the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the industry is the second-biggest consumer of water and is responsible for about 10% of global carbon emissions – more than all international flights and maritime shipping combined.

The good news is that consumer appetite for repair, repurposing and reuse already exists. According to Precision Reports 2024, US and European consumers are driving significant demand in footwear repair services. And global sales of pre-loved items surged by 18% last year according to Global Data.

Here’s five compelling reasons to choose leather as a fashion material that is sustainable, long lasting and can be easily repaired, re-purposed and re-used.

And globally @oxfamgb are promoting Second Hand September this month encouraging us all to take a stance against fast fashion.⁠

Automotive tanner @bridgeofweirleather has presented its BioTAN leather to the public for the first time at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in California.⁠

From the prestigious gathering at @thequailca to the iconic Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, the very best of automotive design, craftsmanship, and innovation was on display.⁠

The Scottish Leather Group company’s biobased leather was on show in the interior of a unique, electrified Porsche 911 (964) from British luxury company @everraticars.⁠
⁠
According to International Leather Maker, the “Evergreen Commission” is the first luxury automotive product in the world to feature a full BioTAN leather interior with a leather-clad roll cage and Recaro Pole Position driver and passenger seats, all of which is upholstered in bespoke harvest-coloured soft nappa hide.⁠
⁠
BioTAN’s progressive approach incrementally increases the bio-content within the chrome-free leather tanning process to above 50% to maintain performance while improving sustainability.⁠

Leather Naturally has opened nominations for a new member of its voluntary Management Board. The position will become vacant in October, after current Chair Debbie Burton steps down after two consecutive terms. ⁠

We are seeking a passionate leather industry professional who believes in the mission of Leather Naturally and related initiatives. Members of the LN Management Board are able to interact with the organisation’s wide network of contacts and engage with leather industry leaders.⁠
⁠
This role will replace outgoing Management Board member Debbie Burton, who has served two consecutive terms over the past six years. Debbie previously led the Communications Team and now holds the role of Chair of the Management Board. ⁠

Last week @allysonchiu from @washingtonpost also wrote a well rounded and informed article comparing the perceived benefits of vegan leather .v. natural leather. ⁠

She reported that some well known brands are still using the word ‘vegan leather’ suggesting a more sustainable consumer choice. But in her words, “it's not as clear-cut as you might think”. Vegan leather is often a rebranding of “pleather’ or plastic leather, a synthetic fossil fuel based textile. ⁠

Whilst we support sustainable innovation in all industries - natural leather is still the most sustainable choice compared to synthetic alternatives. It lasts a very very long time, can be upcycled, recycled, repaired and repurposed - helping to keep it out of fashion landfill.⁠
