The Leathersellers’ Award offers three years of business support, subsidised studio space at Cockpit Studios Deptford, and use of our well-equipped Leather Hub, generously sponsored by the Leathersellers’ Company. ⁠

The Leathersellers’ Company is one of the ancient Livery Companies of the City of London, ranked fifteenth in the order of precedence. It was founded by royal charter in 1444 with authority to control the sale of leather within the City. The Company no longer has this regulatory role, and instead devotes its energies to support for charity, education and the British leather trade.⁠

Supported by their wholesale partner, @abbeyenglandltd , the Surplus Leather Project works with tanneries to donate leather to education partners across the UK, giving students the opportunity to work with the material and develop skills.⁠

Its success has meant the Leathersellers’ Foundation has committed additional funding over the course of the next year. This will enable more education partners to offer design and making students the opportunity to learn skills associated with leathercraft, and to discover more about leather as a sustainable and versatile material.”⁠

Over the past month, Global Design Weeks have been in full blaze and Dutch Design Week culminates the season at the end of October.⁠

Inspiring and incredible leather furniture designs have featured across Europe - and we’ve picked 3 of our favourites:⁠

‘Unhide: Reframing Luxury in London’. An bold installation went on display at the @vamuseum featuring a collaboration between @bridgeofweirleather and @modularbymensah⁠

The piece was inspired by the parallels between the memory of human skins and the natural features of leather, exploring its lifecycle and highlighting leather as one of the most sustainable or ecological materials available.⁠

At Paris Design Week, @duviviercanapes presented the DC 1840 HÉRITAGE collection, celebrating its cultural heritage spanning over 150 years and paying homage to an iconic creation by a great French designer of the 1950s.⁠

Here’s a brilliant new collaboration bag concept from @e_ink and @delvaux launched at Paris Fashion Week a few days ago.⁠

Delvaux’s Helios capsule showcases four designs using E Ink Prism 3 which merge traditional textiles with innovative technologies.⁠

Inspired by E Ink's color-changing Prism film—dynamic electronic ink technology defined by its fully programable, reflective, and low power consumption—Delvaux imagined redefining what luxury can be. Over the past two years E Ink and Delvaux have worked closely together to push the boundaries of technology – ultimately creating a product that weaves material innovation and leather mastery together to create a completely unique and personalized experience.⁠

Founded in 1829, Delvaux has remained at the forefront of luxury leather goods for nearly two centuries because of its savoir-faire, uncompromising craftsmanship, and the outstanding quality of its creations. The visionary and pragmatic Brussels-based luggage maker foresaw the travel revolution approaching and filed its first world patent for a woman’s leather handbag in 1908 with ‘le Princesse’, becoming the inventor of the modern handbag.⁠

Earlier this week we attended the 6th #SustainableLeatherForum, hosted by @AllianceFranceCuir at @maisondelachimie in Paris!

Some of our key takeaways:

🌎 Traceability is on everyone’s minds
Achieving complete traceability for leather products requires better technology, more accurate and reliable data, and collaboration between different stakeholders in the leather supply chain.

👞Raising livestock & leather making
The leather industry should maintain clear communications with consumers about the connection between raising livestock and leather making in order to promote a better understanding of its position as a by-product of the food industry.

🌱Science-based methodologies are key
There have been many attempts to quantify the environmental footprint of leather as a material, which is no easy task. Italian sustainability consultancy @spin360_official is working with @UNIDO_org to create a science-based methodology for creating leather environmental footprints that will take into account product use and longevity, which will help the industry better understand its impact through the supply chain and eventual end use in order to demonstrate a bigger and more informative picture.

Fashion Weeks are underway and our mission led campaign is to encourage fashion #designers, #students, #brands and #consumers to consider #Repair, #Repurpose and #Re-use.

Fast fashion has a significant environmental impact. According to the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the industry is the second-biggest consumer of water and is responsible for about 10% of global carbon emissions – more than all international flights and maritime shipping combined.

The good news is that consumer appetite for repair, repurposing and reuse already exists. According to Precision Reports 2024, US and European consumers are driving significant demand in footwear repair services. And global sales of pre-loved items surged by 18% last year according to Global Data.

Here’s five compelling reasons to choose leather as a fashion material that is sustainable, long lasting and can be easily repaired, re-purposed and re-used.

And globally @oxfamgb are promoting Second Hand September this month encouraging us all to take a stance against fast fashion.⁠
